Etymology: -is < Austronesian, cf. PMP *isi 'flesh (of humans, animals, fruits, tubers); contents; blade of a knife; inhabitants, residents' (ACD); -bak 'body' < Austronesian, cf. PMP *hawak ˈwaist, back of the waistˈ (ACD). The immediate source of borrowing is not known. The same lexical parallelism for 'body' is found in nearby Austronesian languages, e.g., Wetar |fn{isir-wewaki} 'body'.
